Colombo Design was founded in 1990.

It is the determination to continue the entrepreneurial direction that was first embarked upon by the Colombo family some 50 years ago and, in more recent times, the dynamism of its young heirs that has motivated the construction of the Terno d'Isola Industry, a structure completed in only fifteen months and that encompasses more than 14.000 Sq.metres
In 2002 were completed the refurbishment works for an extension of 8.000 covered sq.m (inaugurated in 2003) to the original purpose built factory. Nowadays, Colombo Design is developed on an area of 65.000 sq.m of which 20.000 sq.m of purpose built factory.

The company policy is to produce articles of high standard design for the modern habitat, articles that are easily adaptable and that are accessible to the majority of potential clients.
The company’s initial activity revolved around the production of handles for doors and windows. This range of articles was designed, under the supervision of the Art Director and Architect Carlo Bartoli, with the contribution of the most renowned international artists of the ‘made in Italy’ design such as: Castiglia Associati, Di Blasi Associati, Studio Kairos, Alberto Meda and, naturally, Bartoli Design. Also, at a later date, contributing designers included Angeletti & Ruzza, Archilab, Piet Billekens, Bonini Spicciolato, Luca Colombo, Makio Hasuike, Gianluigi Landoni, Francesco Lucchese Jasper Morrison, Pininfarina.

The Industry at Terno d’Isola, that began production in 1991, is equipped with sophisticated and robotized plants that guarantee a complete internal production cycle.
Principally, it is metal alloys such as brass and chromall that are utilized. These, through a process of pressure die casting or forging, are moulded into the forms most in demand on the market.
The entirely computerised galvanic bath plant ensures the most avant-garde and refined finishings and guarantees their duration at the same time. An achievement also secured by the use of epoxy powder varnishing, a finishing treatment to which all the pieces are subjected. The main benefit afforded by the latter treatment is that of keeping the characteristics of the article itself unaltered while reducing the maintenance requirements of the same to a minimum.

In 1993, upon the strength of spectacular sales results and the affirmation of the trademark within the sector of ironmongery with its handle collection, Colombo Design broached the market in the hygiene-sanitary sector by launching its first range of bathroom accessories. The use of these sophisticated plants for forging metal also guarantees the same exceptional standard of production and quality to this range. The bathroom catalogue has been further enriched by the addition of other ranges, born from the collaboration with the same prestigious designing studios that ensure the design excellence of the handle collection.

In 1998, the MADI handle, designed by Alberto Meda, obtained the Honourable Mention by the Jury of the 18° Compasso d’Oro.

In 2000 Colombo Design has acquired 25% stock of Gedy S.p.A., leader and primary trader within Large Scale Distribution Organization in Italy and Europe for bathroom accessories. This agreement will rank Colombo Design and Gedy as the second greatest (in terms of turnover) Italian manufacturer of bathroom accessories.

Currently, the national territory is homogeneously covered by Colombo Design through two sales networks (one for the ironmongery sector and one for the hygiene/sanitary sector). Both ensure selected and qualified assistance to clientele in conformity with the professionalism and high standards implied by the Colombo Design trademark. The Company has attained the following important quality certification: UNI EN ISO 9001 and UNI EN ISO 14001 (certified environmental management system).

Colombo Design exports uninterrupted to 56 nations, through the services of distributors and exclusive dealers. The turnover for the year 2003 was of 25 millions Euros.
